A few weeks ago, I captured my family unit’s porch session and promoted them softly. I will admit, I got a little timid about fully promoting these unique sessions because I didn’t want any of my clients (or potential clients) to think I was being insensitive during this pandemic. I read so much backlash about other photographers offering these type of sessions and I will admit my eyes were WIDE and my jaw dropped at the negativity and rudeness from others (mainly it was photographers bashing other photographers!). This was not okay with me and did not settle well. So I took some time to think about the opinions and viewpoints of others. And this is where I resolved to stand…
I, like any other small business owner or hard-working American am struggling during this pandemic. Literally in one day my business went from thriving to flat-lining. My couples (oh my sweet couples!) have been forced to change their wedding plans, my seniors have had their final year of school and all of the traditions taken from them, and my new families can’t get precious photos of their newborns documented during a time that is fleeting. It all had become so overwhelming.
Then I remembered the facts: I am a business owner and creative. I have thick skin, I am nimble, I create and innovate, and I am resourceful. Offering these sessions is one of the ways I am working to create, innovate, keep my business alive and bring joy to my clients.
So to the naysayers that are shouting so much hate about small business owners (like me) trying to earn business and survive during this time, I say this…I like many other SBOs am not taking advantage of anyone. I have every right to earn a living. I am offering a service that respects CDC guidelines. Just like millions of others, I am trying to earn money for my family to keep us fed, our bills paid and to be able to keep my business expenses paid so that I may continue to operate my company post-virus. Additionally, this is a unique time (history books unique!) and providing an opportunity to document my clients so that they too can preserve their history is something I will not apologize for capturing or promoting.
So on that note, I vow to keep my Porch-trait offering ALIVE and WELL. And I am so proud to share this AWESOME session of Terri & Jim. A recently engaged couple, quarantined together and also celebrating a birthday!
Here are a few of my favorite captures from the day…
Fun Fact: Terri was the one who lovingly called these sessions “Porch-traits” and it stuck for me!
